You can hear Magnus learn for the first time about Maryse and Luke’s new relationship, and she goes through and explains to him what makes her so excited about it … but also what makes it still so new. She’s just trying to get a further handle on what it is and what they are, and that’s why she doesn’t want it to be spread around to anyone else … which Magnus seems happy to oblige for the time being.
Magnus is a romantic man himself, so it really shouldn’t come as that much of a surprise to anyone that he loves love! He wants to see other people happy. We do also think that him hearing about some of this in relation to Luke and Maryse may be some of the best stuff for him since it is coming at a time in which he’s struggling so much without his magic. He has been unable to really establish a larger sense of his own identity, including allowing himself to open up to Alec. As heartbreaking as the end of this past episode was for him, it may have also been a turning point — think about it almost as him entering the acceptance point in his stages of grief and his low point. Once he cries everything out, he may be able to start taking some steps forward and figure out precisely the person that he wants to be now.
It’s true that there’s no guarantee that Magnus ever gets his magic back — if he does, it’s almost more appealing that it happens once he’s okay having a life without it. That ensures that he won’t identify himself with it when it comes back and he can go on and have a happier, healthier existence. There is an addictive quality to having it, or at least so we imagine, it does put you on this particular plane where you have this one thing that makes you different from the rest of the pack. When you stand out in this particular way, it enables you to develop a different sense of self and maybe push back some parts of who you are that are a little bit different from the mold.
By the end of this episode, we’re hoping for an epic Alec – Magnus proposal. If it doesn’t happen, at least we got a great bonding scene with Magnus and his potential mother-in-law!
