Wynonna Earp season 4 update: Work still being done to make it happen

Wynonna Earp season 3 premiere

It’s been hard waiting for news on a Wynonna Earp season 4, largely because there’s been hardly any news at all.

The situation has at this point been well-documented, both in article and in video form. (Take, for example, our video at the bottom of this article — on the other side of watching that, we suggest that you subscribe to CarterMatt on YouTube for more.) Because of financial issues related to production company IDW Entertainment (they’re responsible for making the show, not Syfy who reportedly ordered a season 4 and season 5), everyone’s been collectively waiting in the lurch to see if there’s a financial situation to bring the show back.

There’s such a terrible contrast between how Earpers and most of the television media see Wynonna Earp and how business-types do. We know that this show is an action-packed and joyous celebration of inclusivity and kicking demon butt, while executives view it more as a transaction. There need to be profits in return for the product, and there hasn’t been an accurate-enough model for finding this show, whether it be via a streaming service like Netflix for current/future seasons or internationally. (The show airs in Canada on Space.) Because of how fragmented TV viewing is in 2019 with so many streaming services/options out there for viewing, it makes it SO much harder for any show to get the proper funding.

This is where we get back now to the latest news of the day. In a post on Twitter, IDW insists that they are “working behind the scenes to bring back another season” for the show. While on the surface this may just seem like yet another regurgitation of the stuff they’ve said before, there is an air of specificity here that wasn’t present beforehand. In the initial statement from IDW after the news broke of the season 4 production delay, they never mentioned “another season” verbatim. This fueled more of our concern that they were looking into alternative ways to deliver the show rather in the traditional format. Hearing these words come from them gives us more of an indication that they are trying to deliver what fans actually want, and that is another batch of episodes featuring these performers and the same hard-working crew behind the scenes. The situation does need to be worked out so that these cast and crew members continue to have jobs — they may love what they do, but it’s also a livelihood for them. We don’t want to forget that in the midst of pining for future adventures for Wynonna, Waverly, and a number of our other favorite characters.
