Law & Order: SVU season 20 spoilers: Snoop Dogg to guest star

Consider this the Law & Order: SVU guest-starring news that we never saw coming — Ice-T will be joined by another rap legend for an upcoming episode! This time around, the legend is Snoop Dogg!

In a post on Twitter (which CarterMatt has for you to see HERE), Ice-T himself confirmed that Snoop will be stopping by for an episode airing this May entitled “Diss.” With that title, you could easily assume that this is an episode about diss-track and hip-hop culture … and some of the complications that exist within. If this is the case, it’s a compelling world that isn’t quite explored enough on network TV — even if it’s not about this, you’re still getting Snoop Dogg on SVU and that in itself feels like a win.

While Snoop is obviously best known for some of his work within the hip-hop community, he’s no stranger to acting roles. He’s appeared as himself in Empire, Monk, Entourage, The L Word, Starsky & Hutch, and a number of other movies/TV shows over the years. He has a certain knack for playing various forms of himself, which does make a good bit of sense when you think about his larger-than-life character with the catchphrases and the persona.

Yet, there’s also this other question to think about now: How this is going to translate to SVU, one of the most serious shows on television? Odds are, the producers will figure out a way to make this work. We’ve never been given a reason to doubt this show’s creative team when it comes to bringing on board new perspectives and voices — they add to the tapestry of the show and more than that, they give more voice to the show’s version of New York City. It’s a place as diverse as they come, not just in people and cultures, but also with ideas.

Here is your reminder now that SVU is pretty far into filming their milestone 20th season, and the finale’s not too far away! Yet, there is still no word on a season 21 renewal and while we remain confident that it’s going to happen, it’s the sort of thing that makes us want to head to NBC at 30 Rock and scream “why the wait!!!” at the top of our lungs. (It’s a good thing we’re not in New York City.) A new season obviously means breaking the record for longest-running primetime drama series ever, but also more opportunities to see some more powerful stories brought to life.

There’s going to be a hiatus, but knowing what we do about SVU, we have a feeling it will be worth the wait. That upcoming episode is going to be bringing a number of different guest stars in its own right including UnREAL alum Shiri Appleby. There’s even a big-name director on board as well, in Elementary star Lucy Liu.

What do you think about Snoop Dogg guest-starring on SVU, and beyond that, what do you want to see in terms of his role? Be sure to let us know in the comments. (Photo: NBC.)
