Next week, The Walking Dead season 9 episode 16 — otherwise known as the season finale — will arrive courtesy of AMC. With that, what you’re going to get is quite simple: One of the most emotionally-trying episodes of the series so far. It’s an episode of recovery, but more so than that this is an episode about further struggle.
When tragedy strikes, there’s nothing more that anyone wants to do other than trying to deal with the aftermath of it immediately. That’s more than likely what everyone within these communities would like to do moving into the finale — deal with the rawness and the difficulties of the moment before trying to actually address what’s down the road. Unfortunately, that’s not quite possible. Within this world, you have zombies, human threats, rivals that you don’t even know about, and then just the sort of terrible stuff that people even outside a post-apocalyptic world have to deal with. Think here in terms of a blizzard. This is an episode entitled “The Storm” for a reason — there is some truly-nasty stuff that is coming up and we’re going to see some of these different characters try to wade their way through this. For us personally, the blizzard itself is never the worst part — it’s always afterwards when everything turns into that muddy slush that gets everywhere and makes your whole place smell. Of course, we’re not in the Walking Dead world, but we would imagine this is worse when there are rotting corpses wandering around.

In the aftermath of an overwhelming loss, the communities must brave a ferocious blizzard; as one group deals with an enemy from within, another is forced to make a life or death decision.
The Walking Dead is a survival show and with that at the heart of the series it makes sense that in this finale, it all comes back to that idea. For the better part of season 9, we’ve seen this world move more towards society and come into contact with the Whisperers, a group that is more about anarchy and throwing a wrench into just about every conventional structure in the world. As we’re starting to see more of this season wrap up, it does make a certain degree of sense to start to see a lot of these different structures become fully at war with one another.
Moving into season 10, we know that the structure and style of The Walking Dead could change again. The Commonwealth as a story may be looming, as is a potential exit for Michonne herself in Danai Gurira. We even address that possibility in the video below — on the other side of watching that, remember to subscribe to CarterMatt on YouTube and check out our playlist!
The finale for this season needs to put a pin or two into a few different storylines, while also crawling towards a new horizon, one scattered with more change but also (hopefully) a sign that within this world, alternating with anarchy and peace, there’s still something more for everyone on the horizon.
