After Supernatural final season news, should new spin-off be considered?

Earlier today, the news first leaked that may be sending a tear down the face of many longtime Supernatural fans — the upcoming fifteenth season of the show is the final one on The CW. It’s a hard pill to swallow and spoiler alert, it’s not going to get all that much easier as we get closer and closer to the final season premiere. It’s hard thinking about the show now in a matter of numbers, such as the fact that there are only 24 episodes left in this story. There are four this season, and then twenty more coming your way starting most likely in the fall.

Given the recency of the news and the sad idea of the franchise coming to a close, it does feel like the timing is right now to broach the idea of a spin-off — heck, The CW has many times already, and that was before it was even known that the end of the road was almost here. Unfortunately, none of the other ideas worked well enough to get that official green light. We do think that Wayward Sisters was the most appealing concept by far but for one reason or another, it didn’t quite come to pass.

Could that concept be revisited now? If you were to ask us which Supernatural spin-off concepts were the most worthy, we’d probably give you this one at the top of the list. It just naturally makes sense given that most of the characters are already popular with fans; also, there will be a clear hole left by the original.

Where do you go otherwise?

Clearly, nobody’s bringing back Bloodlines since that was a pretty obvious miss. Yet, you could probably look towards a supporting character like Jack to be a key player, or something set more around the world of angels. Or, there’s also the possibility that you introduce a new character in season 15 to usher in that spin-off world that you think would give you a legitimately good shot.

The main argument against even trying a spin-off is largely that you want to avoid a situation in which the final season gets diluted, mostly because you’re spending time trying to set up something else when you’ve only got a handful of episodes to do so. Pace yourselves, showrunners! Continue a spin-off idea if you’ve got the time to do so; otherwise, just focus on the characters you’ve got.

Supernatural never ends

If there’s one thing that we’re aware of with total certainty, this is it. We’ve got a really hard time envisioning that this show is ever going to be totally done. There’s always a chance for something more, even if it’s not a completely-immediate thing.
