Supernatural season 14 episode 17 preview: Prepare for ‘Game Night’

Next week, Supernatural season 14 episode 17 (entitled “Game Night”) is going to be here … so who wants to have some fun? Of course, we should also define fun — we’re pretty sure that we’ll enjoy whatever sort of fun comes up for these characters, but we’re also sure that the writers are a little more sadistic than to give you an hour of Sam and Dean playing ping-pong. There’s probably some dark, sinister stuff coming — even more so than usual, as we know that title irony is the perfect excuse to do that.

So what will we see? What will Sam and Dean do? Below, CarterMatt has the official Supernatural season 14 episode 17 synopsis with some more news on what’s ahead:

IT’S ALL FUN AND GAMES UNTIL SOMEONE GETS HURT – Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) race to help a friend in need. Meanwhile, Mary (guest star Samantha Smith) is concerned for Jack’s (Alexander Calvert) wellbeing, and Castiel (Misha Collins) enlists help from Jo/Anael (guest star Danneel Ackles) to track down a miracle. The episode was directed by John Showalter and written by Meredith Glynn. (#1417). Original airdate 4/4/2019.

What’s the most exciting part of this episode? That depends of course on what you’re interested in, but obviously anything that gives us a dose of Winchester brothers in action is going to be far up the list of reasons to watch. Of course, having a great assortment of guest stars never hurts. We like that we’ve gotten to see Danneel Ackles around as a real recurring player in this world; she’s not just someone who stopped by for a short arc, and they’ve evolved that part in some very interesting ways.

The part that has us worried? The like “someone gets hurt,” given that this is probably the one line in here that you really should take seriously. Supernatural may be filling this up with some red herrings otherwise, but we’ve got a good indication already that Jack’s in a complicated spot and clearly, Sam and Dean are helping someone. They’re not just racing to help a friend who has a cat somewhere up a tree.

Also, consider the stakes and the timing of this. There are only three more episodes this season! We’re having a hard time adjusting to this new Supernatural world where seasons are shorter, even if it makes sense to do this almost a decade and a half into the show’s run. Also, how much can we complain when this is still more than three times the count of the final season of Game of Thrones? The remaining episodes of this show are going to go quickly, largely since The CW’s got some other programs and ideas they’re going to be looking to bring to viewers — their goal is to fill up the schedule, while also delivering the entertainment goods.
