The Enemy Within episode 5 preview: Operation Anna Cruz

The Enemy Within

The Enemy Within episode 5 next week is bringing you just about everything — take, for example, genuine story progress! Also, a great opportunity to watch a spy try to be a spy. Go ahead and wrap your brain around this — how much is someone really a spy when you are spying on them, in turn, being a spy? Are they spying at all? If we say “spy” one more time, will the internet fall to shreds?

This upcoming episode, entitled ‘Havana,” is a chance for Shepherd and Keaton to work together in order to get one over on Anna Cruz, the mole lurking within the FBI. She’s gonna keep doing her mole thing of passing along information, but the sneaky thing here is that the team can’t just lurk around the corner and scream “gotcha” at her. If you’re trying to catch someone as dangerous as Tal, the truth is you need someone like Anna. You have to just grin and bear her duplicity for however long it takes. Sooner or later, you are going to be able to use this enemy within (title integration!) to help take down the enemy that exists on the outside.

Take a look at The Enemy Within episode 5 synopsis — we like to think of this as a source for a little more context:

03/25/2019 (10:00PM – 11:00PM) (Monday) : Once Shepherd convinces Keaton that Anna Cruz is a mole inside the FBI working for Tal, Keaton decides to keep his enemies close. With a fox in their henhouse, Keaton and the team spy on one of their own hoping Cruz will lead them to Tal.

There are episodes that you watch for the OMG ending, and there are episodes you watch for the game. Sometimes, playing it is better than getting to the end of it and seeing the result. We firmly believe that this is the case moving into this episode. This is about the chess game and the cat-and-mouse that could eventually lead the FBI to Tal … but we have a hard time thinking that “Havana” is the episode where the skies clear and his location comes shining down in the heavens. We’re only entering episode 5! We’re not anywhere close to the finale. The producers are likely keen to keep this story lasting for a while … and yea, we totally did say keen there to make a subtle wink at The Blacklist, given that these two shows in a lot of ways feel like cousins. One’s a Jennifer Carpenter showcase and the other gives James Spader all sorts of time to chew the scenery.

The one thing that feels fairly guaranteed entering this episode is strictly this — you’re probably going to know a lot more about Anna and Tal by the end of this episode that you do going in. This episode is serving as its own game, but it’s also in the midst of a much larger one that is the game of the season. That’s one we won’t be getting into for a while.
