How did these rumors begin in the first place? Let’s begin by charting that out. We think that a conversation between her and Link from earlier this season spurned the speculation, as they discussed where he goes to try and get away when things get a little much. She was in the midst of a crisis at that moment, and as are many people in that particular position, she was likely looking for some sort of venue in which to get away from the world.
While she may have been thinking of an escape in that particular moment, though, that doesn’t mean she feels that way the rest of the day. We always took it as a simple, in-the-moment conversation, but of course, these things have a tendency to spiral. Of course, that spiral continues when a lot of articles surface that keep that conversation going.
Here’s the good news
It doesn’t seem as though Scorsone is leaving the show at any point in the near future. While answering a question today as a part of a push for a GoFundMe campaign (find out about the worthy cause here), showrunner Krista Vernoff confirmed that the Amelia rumors were just that — rumors. The Link conversation didn’t have some super-secret larger meaning, and her sibling is not showing up down the road as a means of helping the character depart.
Do we think that there are more hard times coming for Amelia? Absolutely — that’s what Grey’s Anatomy is. This is the sort of show that makes grocery stores around the world run out of tissues constantly, and that is not something that we envision really ever changing. But just because there are bumps in the road, that does not mean that Amelia is packing things up and leaving. Be prepared for a huge spotlight episode for Scorsone later this season, one that will show off her extraordinary ability and echo all the way down to your soul. These are the moments and the performances that make Grey’s Anatomy head and shoulders above many other network shows, and they justify its further existence on television, even with fifteen years already in its back pocket.
Let’s plan for some wonderful stuff for Amelia, but also many other characters as we gear up for what is likely to be a season 15 homestretch full of various highs and lows.
