TV Madness 2019: Hawaii Five-0, Legacies do battle in Round One

TV Madness

TV Madness 2019 is officially upon us! March is one of our favorite times of the year for many reasons — spring is in the air, the days are getting longer, and the idea of a bracket is a part of our pop-culture lexicon. TV Madness is CarterMatt’s version of March Madness, where a number of fantastic shows from across the map face off against each other. There are seedings, head-to-head showdowns, and the performance of each show is based entirely on you, the reader.

In this article, we have another battle between shows that could not be any more different. In the case of Hawaii Five-0you have a long-running crime procedural that stays pretty grounded to the real world (with the exception of a few crazy action moments). Meanwhile, you also have Legacies — a first-year show that throws about every different supernatural creature at you that it possibly can. While it is a spin-off of both The Originals and also The Vampire Diaries, it is doing what it can in order to be its own story. Both of these shows are fun, but only one of them can move on…

If you’ve taken part in CarterMatt’s TV Madness before, you likely know how this works — we spotlight the two competitors and then, on the other side of it, give you a poll for you to commence your voting! The poll is located at the bottom of this article.

How voting works – Vote however often you would like! (Technical instructions for multiple voting can be found right above the poll.) We will keep this poll open until Wednesday, March 13 at 1:00 p.m. Pacific time — following that, the winner here will square off against either Blindspot or The Resident, which we anticipate is going to be another tricky battle within this tournament. One of the great things about the tournament this year is that there are a ton of different competitors who we could imagine making it pretty far!

You can see the full bracket (including start dates for each individual round) in the graphic at the top of this article.

The competitors

Hawaii Five-0 (#1 seed) – This is a show with a history of performing reasonably well within the TV Madness tournament; yet, it has yet to make it to the top of the mountain and with that, still has a higher bar to reach for. Could this year be the year? Quality-wise, Hawaii Five-0 is making a good case by continuing to be thoroughly entertaining, hilarious at times, and moving at others. It is one of those shows that constantly throws so much fun stuff at you that you get a different experience almost every time you watch. There is an unpredictability here, but it’s still wrapped in something comforting and nostalgic.

Even though your experience watching every episode may be different, there are still things you can rely on — take, for example, that there will always be a new case that needs solving, or that the backdrop will be nothing short of paradise.

Legacies (#8 seed) – As for Hawaii Five-0’s opponent, Legacies is a show that has brought a lot to the table in a fairly short period of time. If you think back to the original launch of the show, there was uncertainty — could a spin-off of two different vampire shows hold anyone’s attention, or get viewers beyond just those who watched The Vampire Diaries or The Originals? While it may not be a ratings powerhouse, there is such a spirit of imagination and fun here that makes this show all it’s own. The characters are engrossing, and some of the darkness from the end of The Originals is stripped away. It’s the perfect supernatural show for 2019, an era where lighter content is really being embraced by viewers.

As this is the first season of Legacies on the air, this is its first year of TV Madness. It has some steep competition here in the form of Hawaii Five-0, but we’ve seen many a crazy upsets happen over the past few years!

I can’t see the poll; what do I do? – If you are on mobile, scroll to the bottom of the page and click to view the non-AMP version. If that does not work, give the poll a moment to load! On some mobile browsers, it may take a moment.

How can I vote more than once? – If you are having trouble casting multiple votes, try switching your browser, your device, or visiting the page under private browsing or incognito mode. There should be many handy guides online explaining how to do so if interested.
