Is Saturday Night Live new tonight on NBC? A look at what’s next?

SNL

Is Saturday Night Live new tonight on NBC? The first part of this article is all about answering this question. Meanwhile, the second part’s meant to give you a good sense of some of what’s next!

In kicking things off, though, let’s make it abundantly clear: SNL isn’t coming up on the air tonight. The sketch series is taking a breather, as they often do either in late February or early March. There is a familiar pattern here — you get two or three new episodes, then a repeat or two, and then more new episodes. It’s a time-honored tradition, mostly dictated so that the cast doesn’t work themselves to the bone.

If you’ve read any stories at all as of late regarding the filming of the late-night sketch series, then you’ve likely heard a thing or two about what working on this show is like. It’s fantastic work from a creative standpoint, but then also completely and utterly exhausting. You’re working some days until the middle of the night, writing/re-writing sketches or shooting various digital shorts. Sometimes, plans completely fall apart and you are forced to do an entirely different sketch than what you first planned. This happens often with Weekend Update or some of the political cold opens, given that news breaks and changes so quickly in this current job.

While SNL may very well be one of the most rewarding jobs in entertainment, it’s also one of the most exhausting jobs. These are people who are certainly deserving of a chance to catch their breath.

When is SNL returning?

Think next week, which means that this is really not all that terrible a break at all! The next show is being hosted by none other than comedian and former SNL writer John Mulaney, who technically already appeared once this season alongside Pete Davidson. That was the incredible Weekend Update bit where the two “reviewed” the recent Clint Eastwood movie The Mule, and Davidson skewered himself amidst reports of a personal health scare. (If for some reason you haven’t seen this yet, we highly recommend that you take a gander below.)

Mulaney is close to a number of current SNL cast members and has worked with several of them beyond his most-recent hosting gig. He’ll come with ideas, and also a willingness to listen to other silly concepts.

What’s also worth noting is that musical guest Thomas Rhett is set to perform a new single, one that will debut in the days leading up to the show. This is how you launch a new song! We don’t think the majority of the SNL viewer base are country music fans, but this is a good incentive to get most of them to watch. Rhett’s got a solid, loyal support base, so this should be a win-win both for him and SNL overall.

Rest assured, SNL will be plenty worthwhile when it’s back … waiting is just gonna be the hard part.
