Grey’s Anatomy season 15 episode 15 preview: Alex’s mom returns

Alex's mother

Grey’s Anatomy season 15 episode 15 (which is coming to ABC in one week’s time) is going to be about history and that means different things for different people.

Let’s start off with the meta of it all. “We Didn’t Start the Fire” (the title for this episode, which immediately reminds us of Ryan burning his cheese pita in The Office) is the episode that makes this series the longest-running medical drama in history. Take that, ER! George Clooney actually joked in a recent interview that they should come back so that they can re-take the record, but they’re going to be playing catch up from here on out. Grey’s Anatomy has no intention of going anywhere in the near future so this cast and crew could opt to keep running up the score.

Now, let’s drift over to the actual story at the heart of the episode. Cast member Chandra Wilson will preside over an episode that starts with some big hopes and dreams — Jackson will want to support and celebrate his mother, as any good son would in this position. He recognizes that Catherine Fox is coming out of the fires of cancer-hell, still breathing and still fighting. She did not want anyone’s help, but eventually came to understand that it’s okay to need it. She is still standing because of her own resiliency, and also the resiliency of those around her.

Unfortunately for her, it seems as though Catherine will somehow be running into the classic case of Grey’s Anatomy Murphy’s Law — nothing ever goes perfectly and this leads to further fires to put out. Maybe they’re metaphorical ones, or maybe they’re literal. The synopsis that we have for you below has more:

When Jackson throws a party to celebrate Catherine’s surgery and those who worked to save her, literally nothing goes as planned. Meanwhile, Helen pays Alex and Jo a surprise visit.

This episode marks Lindsay Wagner’s first appearance since prior to Jo and Alex’s wedding and it is coming at a perfectly-opportune time. Tonight, Alex was struggling with the demons of his father while trying to give advice to a husband in a precarious position. Now, some of these memories will exist again through his mother’s presence. Their relationship is painful and rocky, but there’s something real there — a truth and an understanding that neither one of them can deny. It’s a bond that should be unshakeable since there are not many people in life that you would have this kind of honest understanding with. They just need to learn to embrace it rather than run from it … unless Helen arrives with news that sends a shockwave down Alex’s spine. The implication that we’ve heard from Camilla Luddington already in regards to Jo and Alex is that this honeymoon period could very soon wither away.
