George Clooney jokes about Grey’s Anatomy beating ER record

Grey's Anatomy season 14

Later this month, Grey’s Anatomy is officially going to topple ER as a the longest-running medical drama in history — and apparently, George Clooney has something to say about it!

Clooney is one of the biggest names associated with the NBC medical drama, which you can credit in part for really kickstarting his career. He only appeared in just over a hundred episodes (which sounds like a lot, but not compared to the overall run of the show) as Doug Ross — he departed after a handful of seasons, but returned down the road in an episode he deliberately wanted to be a surprise.

While promoting his new Hulu series Catch-22 today at the TCA Winter Press Tour, Clooney had some fun (per E! News) talking about Grey’s Anatomy beating the record of his old show: “That’s got to stop. We gotta go back and do some more!” He also joked that if they were to go back now, he’d probably have to play some sort of a patient.

In all seriously, we don’t think that the idea of an ER revival is really altogether that absurd since you are talking about a show that had some big names in the cast and also was popular all over the world. We’re not sure what the enthusiasm would be for it on NBC right now though, unless most of the original cast was involved — they’ve moved on with a number of other success medical dramas, including Chicago Med and New Amsterdam (which are both doing fairly well).

At least for now, we should be glad that Clooney is back in the TV world at all. He did make it clear to reporters today that he really didn’t mind being in either television or feature films; the only thing that he cared about was that he was getting an opportunity to tell great stories and do something that people would actually remember at the end of the day. He is the sort of guy who wants to make the most of his career and do a lot of different things. With Catch-22, he is getting to serve as an actor, a director, and an executive producer — it’s hard to imagine how he could be more involved, unless he were to also arrive with a lighting kit or setting up craft services before anyone arrived on set.
