Supergirl ‘ship Supercorp (Kara Danvers & Lena Luthor) win 2019 ‘Shipper Showdown

Shipper Showdown

Mrs. Carter: Today, a winner was officially crowned in my CarterMatt ‘Shipper Showdown series! You may realize the winner from the title alone, but read on for some of the results…

From its onset, my Shipper Showdown series was about finding one thing and one thing only: Some of the most passionate ‘ships within the world of TV. I almost feel like it’s spouting a cliche to say that there are no winners or losers, but that is really the case. If you pair two characters together and feel the passion or a relatable connection to them then that’s adding something more to your own life and it’s one of the reasons I love ships, romance, love and relationships so much.

If you find a larger community that ‘ship online, it’s even more wonderful since you can share in those moments together, but even if you just cherish that ‘ship within yourself, it’s equally so. The Tumblr accounts, the YouTube compilations, the fanart, and the fanfiction are all beautiful expressions of this feeling that you want to share with the world. It’s a projection of how you feel within about love and as someone who has been happily married for 10 years I have to say that there’s nothing I love more then love!

Too often, ‘ships are trivialized by the television media as something unimportant, as some sort of distraction from the overall story. Yet, there is almost nothing more valuable. These are the reasons that many viewers tune in every week for that “will they/won’t they” push and pull and when they finally get together it’s everything you hoped it would be, and with that in mind any show writer should strive for nothing more than to have fans who cheer so much about the characters that they want to see them together. They’re connecting to something, whether it be the strength of the writing, the chemistry between the actors, or the placement within the story.

The CarterMatt ‘Shipper Showdown series embraces all of that, and after two separate rounds of voting, today I am happy to announce that Kara Danvers and Lena Luthor, otherwise known as Supercorp from The CW’s Supergirl, are the winners of the tournament. Their win was fairly decisive, and it is also continuous. This is the second straight year the duo (played beautifully by Melissa Benoist and Katie McGrath) took home the title. They previously did so back in 2018 and have also won other CarterMatt-related honors including 2018 ‘Shiptober and also the CarterMatt awards ‘Ship of the Year.

This is a victory that the writers, the cast, and above all else the fans of Supergirl and Supercorp should hold with pride. They’ve built a viable community of fans who love and embrace these two characters, and they are willing to put their time, their passion, and most importantly (for the sake of this article) their votes into something more. They should be congratulated thoroughly for that. Do they also deserve more content on the series itself? You better believe it.

If you want to see Kara and Lena in action, remember to watch Supergirl every Sunday on The CW! You can even preview the next new episode right now by heading over to the link here. The next major celebration of ‘ships at CarterMatt will come during ‘Shiptober (my spin on October) that we have been doing for years now at the site … but that doesn’t mean that there won’t be more fun content along the way, so be sure to check back for more Supergirl coverage.
