Saturday Night Live preview: Don Cheadle hopes; Alec Baldwin returns

Saturday Night Live reviewThis weekend’s new Saturday Night Live episode with Don Cheadle is coming soon, and NBC clearly wants you to know that Alec Baldwin is also back. How else do you explain the new preview that they’ve put out, one you can see below?

It’s actually a little bit interesting that NBC is teeing up Baldwin’s return tonight as Donald Trump in advance, mostly because it doesn’t feel like it’s such the massive TV event anymore that you need to set this up with some sort of short preview. We’ve seen the actor take on the Presidential role on a number of occasions already, but maybe the network thinks that A) this is a way to boost the ratings or B) there’s going to be people curious as to how the show will present the recent news about the National Emergency.

We do have a good feeling as to what to expect from Baldwin on SNL these days, so it’s hard to really say that seeing him is a top priority for tonight’s episode.

So what are we really hoping for instead? Think in terms of some really-fun material featuring tonight’s host in Don Cheadle! The former House of Lies star, who is now on Showtime’s Black Monday, has a great sense of humor and can play a lot of snappy, intelligent characters. We’ve seen him do comedy, but not in this particular format. There’s a little joy here in the known, and we’re honestly quite surprised that we haven’t seen him in studio 8H in this sort of big role before.

As for Gary Clark Jr., it’s really all about the music. Halsey did a great job with her performances last week, so we do think that the bar is set pretty high. You want to do something great to make a splash as an artist, but it is also important to have a presentation that will generate some discussion — especially among people who may not be altogether familiar with your work otherwise.

In the end, let’s hope for humor — and also a sketch or two that really stands out. It’s no fun if the show does strictly vapid, predictable material that is good for one night and forgotten hours later.
