For most of this season, one of the things that we’ve said is that on some level, James Spader’s character needs to have a certain degree of distrust in Elizabeth Keen. He knows that someone betrayed him, and he also realize that whoever did it has to be someone fairly close to him. Otherwise, there’s no way that they could have known all of the finer details about where he was on that day and what he was doing.

What this sneak peek below really represents more so than anything else is Reddington actually vocalizing some degree of distrust in Liz, at least in a way in which she would understand or possibly even fear. His declaration comes amidst a larger discussion revolving around the latest case he is wanting to hand over to the Task Force, one that may involve the Blacklister of the week in General Shiro. Like with any other recent case, though, there may be an ulterior motive, and that is what’s frustrating Liz. She challenges him about it, just as she questions why he is not letting her in.

That’s when Reddington makes the rather-sensible declaration that it’s hard for him to have a tremendous amount of trust in law enforcement at present, mostly due to the fact that they are giving him no real reason to do so. He’s operating with two different agendas: Trying to figure out a way to survive, and then also trying to figure out who betrayed him. Liz is one of the few people who really understands the latter as a part of his goal set, and that’s where a lot of the excitement and drama comes from with these two at the moment. They’re playing a game of chess, one where each person knows the next move the other is making … they just don’t want to admit it.

Come Friday night, we’ll get a proper chance to see precisely what happens next.
