Lucifer season 4 episodes will have some run time fluctation

Lucifer

One of the great things that comes with airing a series on Netflix is that you don’t have to deal with some of the same rules that you do in network TV. That includes being beholden to a very specific run time of between 40-43 minutes. It often varies slightly depending on the show and timeslot, but typically you don’t see many network shows longer or shorter than that.

For Luciferit now has a chance to play around a little bit more with some of its times, if it so chooses. We reported all the way back last year that the plan wasn’t for season 4 to have necessarily longer episodes than the first three seasons at Fox — mostly because the show does have a form that works very well for it. Therefore, don’t expect a ton of hour-long episodes or something that varies drastically from the show you’ve come to know and love already.

Yet, there will be at least some fluctuation here and there. In a post on Twitter in response to a fan, executive producer Joe Henderson confirmed that at least 4×09 has a longer run time than usual — it’s not a full hour, but it will make people happy who are hankering for more. This is certainly something that makes us happy, largely because we’re all for the writers/producers having at least some creative freedom. They may have an approximate run time that they want to get to per episode, but sometimes, we’re sure you get in a writers’ room and there are some things that could push the story a little longer — and they are things that you absolutely don’t want to lose.

The ultimate reality here is that even if these ten season 4 episodes were all an hour and a half, we’d still blow through them in the blink of an eye. A sign of a good show is not so much how long it is, but how long it feels. You get lost in the drama, the fun, or the mystery to such an extent that the minutes feel like seconds. Sometimes, sitting through a 21-minute sitcom can feel like watching a two-hour movie. Other times, there are movies that more or less feel like trailers.

Regardless of what Lucifer season 4 feels like when the dust settles, we’re just happy to be getting it soon. The show will be premiering at some point over the next few months; hopefully, there will be some more insight soon.
