The Supernatural 300th episode will be coming onto The CW early next month, and for those of you who are worried about the show’s future beyond it, don’t be. It doesn’t sound as though either Jensen Ackles or Jared Padalecki are ready to hang it up.

Speaking leading up to the episode to Entertainment Weekly, Padalecki made it clear that he doesn’t have a specific episode number in mind for the show — though he does plan to eventually say goodbye at some point down the road:
“As cheesy as it sounds, I feel like we’ll know. But at this point in time, I’m more concerned with the legacy of the show and with the quality of it than I am a season or episode number. There are still stories I want to see.”
This is something that is echoed a little bit further by Ackles:
“It’s the old adage of you always want to leave them wanting more … We don’t want to run it into the ground. And I don’t think that will happen. I still think people care enough about the show, both that make it and that watch it, to not let that happen.”
As of right now, the ratings for Supernatural certainly dictate that there is a good life left for the series, depending of course on what Ackles and Padalecki want to do. It would be incredible if the show could make it to a season 20, but it’s hard to be altogether confident at this point. We foresee, more than the show ending in the near future, the episode count continue to be scaled back. For example, season 14 is only 20 episodes, and we wouldn’t be shocked if it went down to around 16 down the line. That would allow them to continue to do the show and also spend time with their families.
If nothing else, feel confident in the series’ season 15 future. While the ratings for season 14 are down, the current programming situation at The CW makes it such that this is still, quite clearly, one of the most-popular shows that they have. We don’t exactly see that changing at some point in the near future.
