This Is Us season 3 episode 11 video: The Big Three prepare for Nicky

There is something chilling about the closing shot of the This Is Us season 3 episode 11 promo below. After all, it features Kevin, Randall, and Kate all together, standing on the outside of what appears to be Nicky’s trailer home. They’re in Bradford, Pennsylvania, in a home that is likely tied to the episode’s title in “Songbird Road.”

There are a lot of episodes out there that NBC promotes as “the one where everything changes,” but this is a case when such a label is 100% legit. Nothing will be the same after this.

There are so many different layers that need to be peeled back within this episode, starting of course with the fact that the Big Three were not even aware Nicky was alive until very recently. Kevin’s going to be the one to break the news to the family, and Kate’s seemingly not going to take it well. It’s not so much about the fact that Nicky is alive; it’s about the secrecy of it. Jack seemingly knew that his brother was out there, but he chose not to share this information with anyone. You even see Jack in the trailer with Nicky at one point, at a point in which the two brothers are back from war — Jack even has a mustache! The questions you have to wonder here are two-fold: How frequent was the communication between the two, and then why Jack decided to keep his brother’s status a secret.

In the end, we feel pretty confident that Jack only did this out of a desire to keep his loved ones safe. If he felt like Nicky was dangerous, there was no motivation to subject his family to him. Of course, a good counter-argument here is that you actually be honest with some of the other people in your life and allow them to make some decisions on their own. This is probably going to be an illuminating episode at times, but also a heartbreaking one at others given that there’s so much information that needs to be touched on and a lot of it may generate some pretty raw emotion from the entirety of the Big Three and beyond.

Given that “Songbird Road” is a two-part episode, we don’t anticipate all of the answers are going to turn up immediately.
