Tonight, True Detective is coming onto HBO with a two-hour premiere, one that is going to establish the story of Wayne Hays. There’s a lot to learn about this man in terms of his past, and also how so much of that can be reconciled amidst his present. This is a man who has endured a number of significant hurdles in his life and as the story progresses forward, we’ll get to see some more of those hurdles and what he is doing in order to overcome them.
To go along with that, though, Nic Pizzolatto is also going to need to do everything within his power to ensure that the story does keep its focus. A part of the problem with season 2 was that it tried to do too much in too short a period of time, and we do think that there is something to be said sometimes for just allowing a story to breathe — get some great content on the air and then just sit back and watch all of it develop. Good things can happen in small moments that don’t have a lot of weighty writing surrounding them — you just have to give them the time necessary to allow them to be so.
Below, CarterMatt has the official True Detective season 3 episode 3 synopsis with some other news as to what lies ahead:
Hays recalls his early romance with Amelia, as well as cracks in their relationship that surfaced after they married and had children. Ten years after the Purcell crimes, new evidence emerges, giving him a second chance to vindicate himself and the investigation.
Of course, there’s still so much to be excited for with True Detective beyond just the show itself — mostly because the internet community surrounding the series is almost as fascinating sometimes as the series itself. We’re talking about a world that could be chock full of theories and/or various reactions to episodes. Also, it remains to be seen what the public reaction of this series is going to be down the line. While it may be one thing for the majority of critics out there to be satisfied with the show, it’s something different altogether for fans to be on board.
The measure of success this season will be the ratings near the end of the season — that’s where you get a good chance to see precisely how many people are on board and still eager to take a look at what’s going to be coming as we get closer to the finale.
