What’s one of the biggest choices that Reddington is facing? Think along the lines of him being his own counsel rather than having someone he doesn’t trust take on his case. He makes this decision clear in the sneak peek below (via Entertainment Weekly), stating that he feels given the circumstances that it makes more sense for him to be his own attorney than it does being in some sort of situation where he has to clue someone else to everything that is going on — which, to be fair, is incredibly complicated. Just the discussion alone between Reddington and Cooper in front of the judge here makes that clear — Reddington has been a part of the task force as an asset for quite some time now and in that time, he has actually been invaluable in ensuring that a number of high-value targets are brought to justice.

Yet, it’s hard to really see the forest through the trees here. From the outside looking in, almost any judge would understandably question whether or not the reward is worth the effort since allowing Reddington to be a part of this Task Force effectively ensures that he is out causing trouble still for anyone and everyone he comes into contact with. That’s not something that a lot of people out there in the legal system want or appreciate. It’s something that Reddington and Cooper both have to fight for.

This is, at least in part, what makes this present situation so interesting. Perhaps more so than ever before, Reddington is reliant on Cooper being able to convince this judge that he is of value more than he is a danger to society. Even with that, they are facing an uphill battle to get him removed from police custody. Nobody wants to be the prosecutor or the judge who doesn’t come down hard on one of the most-wanted criminals in the world. That’s why so many of them can look at this arrest as a political opportunity. It’s one of the reasons why Liz chose to go about the betrayal in the way in which she did.
