Below, The Orvilel season 2 episode 3 synopsis states the story ahead in the plainest of terms:

Ed, Gordon and Alara visit Alara’s home planet in the all-new “Home” episode of THE ORVILLE airing Thursday, Jan. 10 (9:00-10:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX. (ORV-202) (TV-14 D, L, V)

There are two different questions that stem from reading that synopsis, short as it may be. First and foremost, why are Ed and Gordon the only two people visiting Alara’s home planet? Where is the rest of the crew to be a part of this? We certainly think that there is some room in order to wonder about this leading up to the episode. On the other side of that, it’s also probably fair to wonder precisely why they are coming back right now and if there’s a specific reason that benefits the larger crew as a whole. We expect the episode to be mostly standalone in nature — most episodes of the series are — but for us to learn something more in the process that shapes what lies ahead. Even if these episodes are meant to be thought about as mini-movies in some regard, we certainly do want them to inform the story on some level.

Beyond the story…

Let’s just hope that there is a group of viewers out there eager to watch. We need quality science fiction on television like The Orville, especially where a large pool of viewers can see it. The only way, of course, that’s going to happen is if there does remain a loyal crew of viewers who end up checking out the series live.
