Top Chef: Last Chance Kitchen episode 4: Did Brother Luck, Natalie Maronski advance?

Top Chef -

Tonight, Top Chef: Last Chance Kitchen brought us a new episode, and they did so even though nobody was eliminated from the main show!

Why do that? Well, apparently the producers decided that now was the time in which to narrow the field from three chefs to two. Brother Luck was the last veteran chef standing and with that, he had to face off against Natalie and Kevin. All of them made it through the breakfast challenge without a problem and with that, they got to take part in one of the most strategic challenges of the season. The chefs had 30 minutes in order to prepare seafood: Oysters, shrimp, and fish. The twist here is that nobody could start cooking until everyone was done cooking. This was something that Brother Luck played to his advantage. He was a wily vet and with that in mind, he knew that he could make a good move in just over eleven minutes … or at least that was his plan.

Well, the problem Brother had was that he hit a creative wall and because of that, he could’ve actually used the extra time to conceptualize something for the fish. Kevin decided to take the oysters and beer-batter them (while also drinking said beer); meanwhile, Natalie just decided to put together a boil using the shrimp. On paper, we thought that Kevin’s idea was the most interesting, largely because it felt a little bit more innovative than what we were getting elsewhere. Having a good idea can go a long way on this show.

The big twist in the episode tonight was that apparently, nobody did a particularly good job. Brother tried to play the game to such an extent that he forgot about the food. Meanwhile, Kevin took a little too much of a risk with his battering and Natalie’s tomatoes turned mushy on the plate. Kevin ended up going home, but we feel like the other two chefs lucked out that this was the way things went this time around. As a personality we really like Kevin — he’s from a relatively small town and there was something quaint about him being on the show competing against the big dogs. He just didn’t have it this time.

As for Brother and Natalie, we like them both — we know that they both can cook like nobody’s business, and they are going to need to harness just about all of their skill as they continue to move forward. Next week, there are going to be two new chefs entering Last Chance Kitchen and because of that, everything is going to ratchet up to 11.
