Luther season 5 episode 1 spoilers: First details on premiere!
Given that there are four episodes to the upcoming season, don’t expect the premiere to accelerate the story too much. Instead, we are anticipating its value coming via exposition and setup. You will get an update on John Luther’s life, while understanding precisely the nature of the latest crimes. He’s going to have a new partnership, a confounding mystery, and eventually, pressure put upon him like never before. It’s hardly like this is the first season that Luther has been under the gun – we have seen him tow that line before and while he doesn’t always do everything above board it’s always fun to watch the choices he does make.
Recently, the BBC released some official Luther season 5 episode 1 details; CarterMatt has those for you below:
While the monstrous and seemingly indiscriminate killings become ever more audacious and public, Luther and new recruit D.S. Catherine Halliday (Wunmi Mosaku) are confounded by a complex tangle of leads and misdirection that seems designed to protect an untouchable corruption.
As the body count rises, and gangster George Cornelius (Patrick Malahide) applies his own pressure, can Luther catch a killer and save his own neck?
The BBC is doing something quite fascinating when it comes to the airing structure of Luther season 4 in general. Namely, they are airing all four episodes over the course of a single week. The season 5 finale will air on January 4, and after that, you’ll be left to wonder if a movie or a season 6 will be coming down the line. Idris Elba spoke of a potential movie during his UK press tour for the series, and we certainly could see one happening if this season is popular enough.
The Alice Morgan of it all
While there have been suggestions aplenty, including via a BBC teaser, that Ruth Wilson will be making her grand comeback to the series in season 5, you can’t be altogether shocked that she is nowhere to be found in the synopsis. The network’s already teased her character as much as they are going to, given that they likely want some elements of her presence to be a surprise. When you’ve left a character off the show for so long (and presumably dead), the possibilities are more or less endless as to how they could come back.
