Following Luther season 5 in the new year, is it really possible that a movie version of the property is coming at some point down the line? It certainly seems that way.
Speaking (per Variety) recently at the launch event for the new season, star Idris Elba confirmed that show writer Neil Cross is already working on a feature-film version of the show that could take some of the action and the drama to another level:
“We are really advancing on getting a movie version [of the show] up on the screen. Neil is beavering away on writing this thing, and I think the remit for the film is to scale it up … Luther has all the ingredients to echo those classic [neo-noir] films of the 90s like ‘Seven’ and ‘Along Came a Spider,’ and I think what we would like to do is use that blueprint to create ‘Luther’ the film. It will be more murder, more Volvos, more frowning Luther… essentially we just want to try to take it to a much bigger audience and scale, and perhaps international as well.”
Could a Luther movie work? Undoubtedly it could, given the fact that the series is already fairly-cinematic in nature as it is and this would just offer up a chance to tell an even larger, more dramatic version of the story that we have seen to date. Yet, at the same time we also are not the biggest fan in the world of series opting to become movies, largely because it changes up some of the originally-established format. Luther is a great television series, so does it really need to become a movie/
Also, beyond that there is another question worth wondering here: On the other side of the movie coming out, would you really be able to jump back over to television? That is not a particularly-easy transition to do and we would worry about whether or not the series would be able to actually pull that off to a certain degree.
Despite any concerns we may have…
It’s really hard to be anything other than super-psyched about the prospect of more Luther, given that we are talking about one of the strongest, most-intense series that is out there. Cross and Elba have created a rather fantastic world to explore and while we’d prefer it stay a series, it’s hard to complain about seeing the story continue in any form.
Luther season 5 will air, starting on New Year’s Day, on BBC One in the United Kingdom. There is no official BBC America return date just yet.
