For those of you wanting some of the first official details on Luther season 5, the good news is that you don’t have to wait any longer! Today, the BBC released both the official synopsis and trailer for the upcoming batch of episodes, and ironically, we think that a split-second reveal at the end of the trailer is going to mean more to everyone than almost anything else in there.
So what are we talking about here? It has to do with Alice Morgan, who is featured briefly in the closing seconds of this trailer (so briefly that if you blink you will miss her). She’s shown with a tiny bit of blood on her face and while it’s not entirely clear what she is up to, it’s hardly a coincidence that she is shown here. In the Luther universe she is allegedly dead (which we never wanted to believe because Alice is too awesome of a character to kill off), but rumors of Alice being alive have been out there since before the start of season 4, and it certainly makes sense that now is the time to explore this further. With Ruth Wilson no longer working on The Affair, it does open her up to take on a number of different roles and challenges elsewhere – like coming back to Luther! Their relationship is one of the most dynamic we’ve seen on television (and we watch a LOT of television!), so to have the chance to see these two back on our TV screens again is something we are beyond excited about.
As for the synopsis, take a look at it below:
When the moonless shadows of London give birth to a new nightmare, DCI John Luther is once more called to immerse himself in the deepest depths of human depravity. While the monstrous and seemingly indiscriminate killings become ever more audacious and public, Luther and new recruit DS Catherine Halliday are confounded by a complex tangle of leads and misdirection that seems designed to protect an untouchable corruption. But even as the case brings him closer than ever to the true face of evil, a reluctant Luther is forced to confront the unburied demons of his own recent past. Striding back into the line of fire, he must choose who to protect and who to sacrifice. His next move will have devastating consequences for those around him — and change him forever.
Basically, Luther is going to find himself once more struggling to determine the right way for him to move forward, both in terms of his career and also himself as a person. He is a man very much intent on trying to do the right thing, but his own personal history and choices sometimes complicates that. It’s one of the many aspects of Luther that makes him so compelling as a character.
When will Luther season 5 premiere?
There is no firm date as of yet, but it seems as though BBC One wants to launch it over the holiday. Meanwhile, that would mean that BBC America is looking for a launch of the show early on in 2019. You may have to wait a while longer for the new season, but at least know that the series is not too far on the other side of the horizon.
