This time around, we are putting the focus squarely on Jamie (Sam Heughan) and Claire (Caitriona Balfe), who are clearly going to not have that much of a chance to take a breather in the wake of all that happened in “Savages.” While they have some great news in the form of Murtagh being back around, they’re also up against a series of very difficult challenges. For one, they have to continue to try and keep the peace between many new settlers and Native Americans. Meanwhile, they also have to find a way to ensure that they are on the right side of history when it comes time for the American Revolution. They have a handful of years in order to figure that out; Claire has the advance knowledge of it, and the real difference between this situation and Culloden is clearly that here, at least there are very few incentives to stay on the side that will be defeated. There’s a land title to think about, but that’s about it and after the Americans win, Jamie may not have to worry about that as much depending on what happens in the war.
Oh, and did we mention that there’s some other drama the two have to deal with in terms of new arrivals?
In the first photo preview for this episode, we teased the impending arrival of David Berry as Jord John Grey — while we don’t have any new photos of him here, this one of Jamie clearly suggests that something is going awry. The way that his coat is moving makes it clear that he is moving along at a fairly-brisk pace and clearly has his sights set on something. The real question here is precisely what that specifically is.
This final preview seems to feature Claire putting away one of the horses — she is going to be responsible in part for helping to heal an ailing John Grey, so maybe this is meant to represent her traveling in order to get the necessary medicine to help him; or, maybe this is just her tending to some of her everyday duties at Fraser’s Ridge. We are still getting a good sense as to what those are, which shouldn’t come as much of a shock given that we are still so new to this chapter of Outlander. We’ve seen the construction of the new home and Jamie and Claire’s life, but there are so many other elements still in flux including the community’s future.
