Sunday’s new episode marks the first appearance of the season for Berry, who we know embodies this particular character rather fantastically. Lord John is a complicated man with a number of forces constantly pulling at him, whether it be political titles, his sense of duty, and also the past relationship that he has with Sam Heughan’s character of Jamie Fraser. To call it complicated isn’t even doing it justice. They’ve had a number of shared experiences and most importantly to Jamie, Lord John has spend the past several years caring for Jamie’s biological son William. Willie will be back in this episode, though he is not featured in the above image.
While it does seem as though Lord John is happy to be at Fraser’s Ridge in the above photo, a good question to wonder here is just how long is that going to last…
What is going to be a little bit more important with Lord John is what happens following his arrival to North Carolina, as he will fall ill and rely on the care of Claire to get better. She and him have a complicated relationship in their own right, but maybe Grey’s time at Fraser’s Ridge will change the dynamic somewhat. It’s going to be a tricky situation since Grey’s illness will put Jamie in a spot where he will accompany William on a trip through the wilderness … one that eventually makes it clear that Willie is very different from his father. They will run into some trouble with the local Native Americans and Jamie will have to find a way to smooth over this particular situation.
While Outlander is bringing in Lord John only on occasion at the moment, we do continue to wonder as to whether or not this traveling man and political figure is going to be set up for a spin-off show down the line? The source material via Diana Gabaldon is certainly there and Berry does seem open to it; the question to us remains whether or not he will get the face time and the material that would be required in order to win over Outlander show-only viewers to the concept.
