We’re back today with another edition in our ongoing Better Call Saul season 5 spotlight series, and the focus for this one is on none other than Mike Ehrmantraut!

One of the reasons why we chose the photo above as the thumbnail piece for this article is that this feels almost forever ago at this point. Jimmy McGill and Mike barely had any story together at all for the fourth season, and yet, it does feel as though the two are still on a collision course to be back in one another’s orbit moving forward. At the end of season 4, Jimmy made it clear that he was about to begin his journey as Saul Goodman in earnest. He is adopting that persona, and with that in mind, we want to obviously see more of these two working together in the future.
Beyond this, though, we do have a few other things on our wishlist…
More of Mike and his family – This is the emotional core of the character and, to go along with that, is one of the real reasons why we enjoyed him as much as we did in Breaking Bad. Continuing to see him turn on and off various parts of his personality in order to be around her is one of the things that we, at least at present, are the most curious to see.
The impact of killing Werner – This scene with Mike was probably the most important one in the season 4 finale, largely because it put him on the road where this is what he would need to do in order to continue to have a role in this empire. It’s a horrible, painful thing to think about it, and we do certainly believe that it should simmer in Mike’s head for at least a little while.
What becomes of Mike’s granddaughter? – Kaylee is one of the more curious people within this story in that she did benefit in some ways from Mike’s business dealings, but also was at arm’s length from many of them far more so than Walt’s family. It would be fascinating to get some sort of flash-forward where we could see exactly what became of her after everything that happened to her.
Of course, more with Mike and Gus – We don’t really say this for story reasons so much as we just want to get more of Jonathan Banks and Giancarlo Esposito in the same place. After all, these performances strongly contribute to the greatness of this show.
