How Gotham season 5 is bringing The Riddler, Penguin forward

Gotham

At the very end of Gotham season 5, we’re going to eventually have an opportunity to see something quite awesome — some of your favorite iconic villains as they would be in the era of Batman.

As the image below via Tze Chun’s Twitter account reveals, you are going to have a chance to see some awesome, fully-formed versions of the Riddler and the Penguin. In the case of the former, you’ve got him wearing a new green ensemble coupled with some tiny glasses that feel very much appropriate somehow. It’s an odd but rather-fun combination since you’re basically mixing something super-quirky to what looks to otherwise by a really cool version of the costume (or at least as cool as a vest riddled with question marks — get it? — can possibly be.)

As for Robin Lord Taylor’s version of Oswald, we would call the change here even more dramatic given that the character is now sporting a top hat, a monocle, and also a little more of an outlandish suit than we’ve ever seen from him before. This is more of the full-fledged crime boss that Batman runs into so many times as the Dark Knight of Gotham.

These costumes are fun, but beyond just that, we do think that they represent rather nicely the rather significant amount of effort and commitment that the team is putting in to making the final season great. Almost everything possible is being thrown into the Gotham cauldron so that the ending is a celebration of Batman but then also a culmination of much of what we’ve seen through the bulk of the series to date.

In leading up to these scenes at the end of the season, what we’re going to see across season 5 is a storyline in which the city has largely fallen into anarchy after Jerome’s attack. Various villains control different parts of the city (as seen in the recently-released promo) and Jim Gordon is going to be swimming upstream trying to contain just about all of it. We feel for him, given that this character is someone who has been through so much and yet almost no matter what, something happens that keeps him from being able to make the city safe. Based on what we know about the future, things aren’t going to get any better for him. We’d tell him to retire and move away, but it’s pretty clear that he doesn’t quite want to do that, either.
