Manifest episode 9 preview: Is someone set to die?

Manifest episode 9 isn’t going to be your ordinary episode of the NBC series. Instead, it may feel like the culmination of several different episodes that you’ve seen up to this point. Whether you are talking about the missing passengers or the relationships between some of these couples past and present, all of it is about to come to a head in “Dead Reckoning.” You’re going to get a reminder that nothing can be quite what it was back when flight 828 first took off, and signs also point to the series killing off an important character, as well.

(Side note: Want to prove that your show means business in the early going? A good way to do that is killing someone off. It establishes that you’re willing to take risks and make fans angry. That’s so much better than being boring, especially if the plan is for your show to last for many years.)

11/26/2018 (10:00PM – 11:00PM) (Monday) : When Ben (Josh Dallas) and Michaela (Melissa Roxburgh) put everything on the line to save the other missing passengers, the mission goes horribly awry and not everyone makes it out alive. The devastating result pushes Ben and Grace (Athena Karkanis) to a traumatic brink, while pulling Michaela and Jared (J.R. Ramirez) dangerously close together. Also starring Luna Blaise, Jack Messina and Parveen Kaur. TV-14 V

If nothing else, it feels a little bit like this episode will do a good job of tying up the current story of the missing passengers, which is something that the writers have worked hard to emphasize the past few weeks. We do think that there are some little answers coming in here, but this is the fun with a show like this: Balancing out some of the small reveals with the big reveals that are inevitably coming down the road. We don’t expect the writers to deliver the truth about the plane itself this season, but if they can find a way to interject a few different reveals here and there along the way, they can probably pull off their version of having their cake and eating it too. They create fun, buzz-worthy moments while also still finding a way to continue making the show that has become one of the biggest hits of the fall.

Now that we’ve said all of this, though, let’s ponder over this: Do we really need to see Michaela and Jared get back together so soon? We’re really not 100% sure that we are at this particularly at that point in the show just yet — they could probably milk it for at least another three or four episodes to get us where we need to go.
