The Blacklist season 6 midseason spotlight: What we should expect

In today’s edition of our ongoing midseason spotlight article series, we are putting the focus firmly on one of 2019’s most-anticipated shows: The Blacklist. Why wouldn’t it be? This is one of the strongest shows out there and it’s clear at the moment that it’s ready to deliver one knockout punch after another.

Before we do anything else here, let’s kick things off with a reminder of where season 5 left off: With Liz Keen finally learning the truth about her father Raymond Reddington … which was that he wasn’t actually her father, after all. The man pretending to be Reddington isn’t actually him, and that blows up almost the entire universe of the show and poses questions as to where in the world the producers go from here.

While the writers have been rather-hush-hush on specifics, the safe assumption entering season 6 is simply this: Liz won’t be sitting idly by and allowing things to develop as they have. One of the best things about being close to Reddington for the better part of the past several years is that she has learned from him — she understands how he operates and how he gets information and stores it. This is a chance for the student to become the master. She knows that she needs to find information on his true identity; yet, she will probably do so discreetly. Expect season 6 to be about Liz continuing to put on a front suggesting that she and Reddington are actually on the same team. Yet, behind the scenes she will probably be doing her part in order to zip her lip and not clue in anyone who could be inclined to say something to him and blow her operation before she uncovers the truth.

Can Liz trust anyone with this secret? – We look towards her possibly telling at least a couple of other people, given that she can’t quite possibly do this alone. Aram is a good, trustworthy person to tell just because he excels at finding information. Meanwhile, Ressler certainly has an acute understanding as to how to handle Reddington. Dembe may actually be the most interesting candidate of all here, mostly because we are speaking about a man who has some awareness that Reddington needed to come clean about … well, something. Yet, this doesn’t mean that he would actually be willing to help Liz or do anything that would betray Reddington.

Other things to watch – Be prepared for some more exciting mystery guest stars and, beyond that, hopefully a wedding for Aram and Samar. Given that they are now engaged, isn’t this the perfect time to see what a ceremony could look like for them? Let’s just hope that it goes better than the wedding where Liz faked her own death…
