Shannen Doherty defends new Charmed reboot, asks for kindness towards cast

Charmed

Since the Charmed reboot on The CW was first announced, it’s been fair to call the reaction divisive — or largely negative. The series itself has been attacked by a number of people who dislike the idea of their favorite show getting re-done, and also by people who are just tired of reboots in general.

Yet, the new series has at least generated some reasonable ratings for the network so far, and it has found itself one high-profile defender in original series star Shannen Doherty. Speaking to fans at Comic-Con Paris (text via TVLine), the actress shared her thoughts and also explained that this is a show that may still appeal to a new generation — and that isn’t exactly a bad thing:

“I have seen a lot of people be very mean and very negative and cruel to the new show and the new cast … I want to remind everybody that these are three girls who just want to act. They got a huge opportunity, and I would implore everybody to be a little bit kinder … This is a show about three strong women again… I know that it may not be your Charmed, but you should all really pat yourselves on the back and congratulate yourselves, because you’re the most loyal, amazing fans in the world. And because of you, you made it a show that a younger generation wants to see.”

What we’ve always said is this: Even if the new Charmed ends up getting canceled after a few more weeks on the air (which seems unlikely), it still doesn’t take away from the old Charmed. One series may be based on the other, but these are two separate entities meant for different audiences. We just think that, if anything, the new show is a sign of the old show’s success. So long as it’s not going out of its way to do something to slam the original show’s story, we don’t foresee any enormous problem with it. Plus, the original is still out there and it will and should be beloved by many.
