Shameless season 9: Where is Ian? A reminder on Cameron Monaghan’s status
The unfortunate news here is that Ian is just not a part of the series anymore, as Cameron Monaghan formally exited the show last week. He did have a fitting end, though, as the character reunited with his former love Mickey behind bars and the two parties shared a moment. There was a beautiful element of serendipity to it, and we certainly think that after everything Ian has been through, he certainly deserves some happiness.
Do we think that Ian’s going to have an easy time in prison by any means? Hardly, but at least he’s getting a chance to spend a little bit of time with someone he does care about, and in turn, someone who cares about him.

Of course, we do also think that there is a possibility that we get to see more of Ian down the road … though we also don’t think that it’s going to happen within the near future. Maybe if there is a season 10 or a proper series finale down the road, you get a chance to revisit Ian’s story at that point. After all, these characters probably aren’t meant to be behind bars forever … and even if they are over the next few years, we do think that there are some reasons to think that they could get a visit from one of the other characters. This exit was in the works for a very-long time, but it doesn’t seem as though there’s any ill will here; the door may always be open, just as it is with Emmy Rossum.
