Outlander spin-off talk: Where’s it coming from at this time?

David Berry

Where are so many stories coming at the moment about a potential Outlander spin-off? If you search the show on Google at the moment, you’ll see a number of different results come up related to it.

On paper, this remains an appealing idea — and also one that feels fairly sensible. After all, series author Diana Gabaldon has written already a series of stories about the Lord John Grey character, and these could easily be the basis for a separate show. While the character (played by David Berry) still has a role to play on future Outlander seasons, it’s not as though he is in so many scenes that he could not add another show to his portfolio.

Anyhow, the reason for the recent headlines has to di with a tweet from Gabaldon, one in which she says that “interest has been expressed” in doing some sort of spin-off series with Berry. By no means does this guarantee that it will happen, but it’s yet another reminder that there are many people out there who would eagerly want for this to happen.

Down the road, who knows? We don’t necessarily think that this is a huge priority for Starz at the time, but it could be something that they consider down the road, especially if Outlander eventually moves to a point where there are even longer waits between seasons. It’s possible that this could happen as a way to give everyone some time off, and you could fill the breaks in between with a Lord John series. We could see this working with possibly a six or eight-episode season, but there is one other question also worth posing here: How long could you keep it going? While Lord John has his stories, they are fewer than those of Jamie and Claire.
