Hawaii Five-0 season 9 episode 4 review: Jerry and Junior’s emotional trip

Hawaii Five-0 season 9 episode 4

Hawaii Five-0 season 9 episode 4 did something special from the onset: It told a story that put Junior and Jerry separate from the rest of the team. These two characters have not spent a ton of time together on-screen, separate from the rest of the group. What we got as a result of that was potentially Jorge Garcia’s best performance since Lost.

In this episode, Junior found himself in a position where he was asked to escort the body of a late serviceman back home. It was a solemn, important duty, and one that he took seriously. Doing so made him flash back to his own time in the military and beyond that, it also made him think about how he originally asked his father to fulfill this duty in the event something happened to him. He refused, and because of that, he ended up asking his cousin to do it.

Meanwhile, Jerry also told Junior about a time in which he wasn’t able to join the military despite wanting to and feeling broken and hurt because of that. This gave Junior a chance to comfort him, much like Jerry comforted him and encouraged him to see if there was a way to make things better with his father.

By the end of the episode, we learned why the late serviceman chose Junior to escort him home — it was a young man named Christopher who Junior encouraged to enlist at a high-school ceremony. That was when Jerry opened up further and told him about how he encouraged his friend to enlist; he died, and Jerry was so ashamed that he wouldn’t go to his funeral. That was why he decided to go with Junior. It was a way to right a wrong, and also a way to ensure Junior didn’t make the same mistake.

As for what else we saw tonight, the murder itself (involving an illegal sand trade) was exciting and action-packed. Also, we had a discussion about the legacy of Duke. Early on in the episode, he told Steve that he didn’t want to go through with the hearing in order to get his job back. Why? It was really a question of him wanting to have some peace in his retirement. Yet, over time that sentiment started to change and by the episode’s end, he made the decision to fight to get his place of employment.

As for why Duke wanted to fight, it all comes down to one thing mostly: Legacy. He wants to ensure that he can define his career under his own terms, and not be forced out because of someone else. Steve is planning to be there to support him, so he knows that there will be someone fighting at his side every step of the way.

CarterMatt Verdict

Overall, this episode offered us one of the best performances by Beulah Koale and Jorge Garcia ever on this show — while there was still a case-of-the-week format, we think it will be defined more about the emotional power and its theme of honoring the fallen. While this journey may be emotional, in the end it can still be very much rewarding.
