Could Outlander ever actually film in North Carolina in the future?

Outlander season 4

Outlander season 4 is going to feature a story in which many of the characters are living within a North Carolina setting back in the 18th century. However, there is something that many diehard fans know already about this: It is not the actual North Carolina at all. This season was filmed in Scotland from the fall of last year until this past summer, and the production team did an exceptional job of making the place look rather similar to how North Carolina would look during this particular era.

Yet, at the same time, there are always going to be clamors by some to have the show actually film in the US, whether it be to capture actual iconic places or to just give more fans a chance to scope out the locations. So is this something that we can see actually happen?

We understand where the temptation here comes from, but at the same time, we also do recognize why it’s unlikely. Outlander already has an established crew of hard-working, super-talented people overseas. If you want to film in America, you face the challenge of either paying for transport and visas for many of these people or finding new crew members you may not be as familiar with here. To go along with that, there are also tax implications that come with filming somewhere else, getting proper permits, and really being able to do what you set out to do. It’s an arduous process moving a production, especially when you’ve got a well-oiled machine already. We like that Outlander does have a Scottish home base — it’s tied to the series’ culture and history, and to go along with that, it just makes sense for so many of them to stay there.

If Outlander ever does come to North Carolina in the future, we don’t foresee it being some sort of permanent thing. Instead, our perception is more that we could see the cast and crew come over in order to shoot at some sort of iconic location that cannot be replicated elsewhere. We foresee it being a fairly-brief thing, and not something that we’re necessarily banking on. We think that if you’re a fan in North Caorlina and want to see the cast, maybe the best thing you can hope for is the cast doing some sort of event in the area in the future. After all, they are doing one in Georgia coming up next month, and that is where Jamie and Claire landed at the end of season 3!
