Outlander season 4: Will later premiere date help Golden Globes chances?

At this point, there’s a pretty good chance that you know Outlander season 4 is premiering on Starz come Sunday, November 4. It’s just over a month away! That is a cause of great excitement, as is the fact that the show is still premiering at a time in which it can be considered a part of the Golden Globes awards race. The fourth season will be eligible, even if only a handful of episodes will have aired by the time the nominations are announced.

So will this actually help or hurt the show’s chances? The reason this matters from our end is because the Globes have been the kindest of the major awards shows when it comes to nominating the series, especially star Caitriona Balfe.

We do think there is some benefit that comes along with recency, as this show will be on the minds of voters in a way that other shows that premiered earlier in the year may not. We’ve seen shows like The Affair benefit in the past from premiering right around the Globes voting window. There’s that extra bump because of premiere press and you do have to take that into account.

With that being said, you do also have to wonder this: Will there not be enough episodes out there to build a lot of buzz among some critics for the show? Many do screen the series earlier, but it has a smaller lead-up time than some other shows that are out there.

Ultimately, we don’t foresee the premiere time having a negative impact; it may even have a small positive impact. The thing that may actually help the series more than anything else is its international feel and being a period drama. These are two factors that have shown themselves to be rather important in Golden Globes voting over time.

The Golden Globe nominations are not announced until December, so we do still have a good while to wait. Nonetheless, it never hurts to start getting the conversation out there now!
