9-1-1 season 2: Where is Connie Britton, and why did she leave?

911 season 2

If you’re watching the 9-1-1 season 2 premiere on Fox Sunday night, it is fair to ask one simple question: Where is Connie Britton?

Well, the simple answer to this is that the Abby character departed at the end of the season. With that in mind, it’s easy for the series to write her out. This doesn’t mean that Buck is necessarily over her, but she’s not going to have a presence onscreen in the near future. We do think that Abby could return down the line, but there are no concrete plans to bring Britton back in the future.

So why did the character leave in the first place? Well, it has a little bit to do with the simple fact that she wants to move forward and do some other things. Back when Connie first signed on to do the show, she did so with an agreement that she would do it for a season. She only booked a one-year deal, which was to help to get the show off the ground. She has a new project now in Bravo’s Dirty John that is taking up much of her time.

For those of you who are still hopeful that there is going to be a chance to see Connie again on 9-1-1 in the future, know this: She has a great relationship with executive producer Ryan Murphy and we do like to think that this goes a long way. Just remember for a moment here that she worked with him on American Horror Story and American Crime Story in addition to this show. It’s more than fine to want her back, but we wouldn’t get hung up on the idea since 9-1-1 will be moving forward, with Jennifer Love Hewitt’s character Maddie becoming more or less her replacement at the call center. She’s a very different person, but she will command a reasonably-similar amount of screen time.
