Emmys 2018: Should Alexis Biedel, Lena Headey, someone else win Supporting Actress?

Emmys 2018

The 2018 Primetime Emmys are airing on NBC come Monday, September 17, and we’re starting to take a look ahead at the categories! We want to do our best here to not only analyze the field, but also figure out just what shows will and should emerge as the champion.

For this particular article, we’re putting the focus on Supporting Actress in a Drama Series! This is one of the most-populated categories of the awards-show field this year, which is mostly the result of there being so many worthy performers and then also a small discrepancy with some of the overall votes. That puts us in a position where we have to look at an even more chaotic field than ever — though we do think that there have been some clear favorites.

At the end of this article, there is a poll for who you think should take home the trophy — after we get through our own analysis, of course.

Voting Rules – Vote however often you like! We’ll announce all reader predictions at 10:00 a.m. Pacific time on September 17, leading up to the start of the awards.

The nominees

Alexis Bledel, The Handmaid’s Tale

Millie Bobby Brown, Stranger Things

Ann Dowd, The Handmaid’s Tale

Lena Headey, Game of Thrones

Vanessa Kirby, The Crown

Thandie Newton, Westworld

Yvonne Strahovski, The Handmaid’s Tale

Who should win

This is tough because there are a ton of worthy nominees here. For example, we do think that Kirby had a breakout season in The Crown, just as Strahovski did the best work for her entire career in The Handmaid’s Tale. Millie Bobby Brown is probably the consensus favorite among many casual TV fans, with Lena Headey not necessarily having her meatiest season on Game of Thrones.

If we had to choose someone, though, based on overall quality of work, it has to be Ann Dowd for her extraordinary performance. Aunt Lydia is the sort of character you could be remembered for quite a few years to come moving forward.

Who will win

We do think that this is one of those instances in which Emmy fans and voters will align — Dowd is the most likely choice from voters, though we could foresee a situation in which Kirby wins it. It could really come down to whether or not all of the nominees from The Handmaid’s Tale ended up splitting the vote; if that happens, almost anyone could break through and be declared the winner in the end.

I can’t see the poll; what do I do? – If you are on mobile, scroll to the bottom of the page and click to view the non-AMP version. If that does not work, give the poll a moment to load! On some mobile browsers, it may take a moment.

How can I vote more than once? – If you are having trouble casting multiple votes, try switching your browser, your device, or visiting the page under private browsing or incognito mode. There should be many handy guides online explaining how to do so if interested.
