The Flash season 5 spoilers: Cicada will stand out from other villains

Flash season 4

Who is Cicada on The Flash season 5? Other than the Big Bad for the year, the producers have not been particularly willing to divulge information. They’ve kept close cards to the vest, and there are a number of sensible reasons for that. For starters, there’s no need to rush things along. Also, they may not want to spoil something, even if they do so on accident.

In the comics, we know that Cicada is a cult-like figure, and also someone who is for the most part responsible for taking out people Barry has previously saved. His powers include immortality, which he gains in part from sapping out the life force of his victims. Given that this is a character who cannot die via normal means, that in itself should show you why he is such a threat. Basically, this is someone who is not going to be afraid of Barry Allen in any shape or form. He will do whatever he wants at any point in which he wants to do it.

While some of his precise abilities within the comics remain to be seen, executive producer Todd Helbing did have the following to say about Cicada through the lens of the show and this season to TVLine:

“A big part of the story of this season [is about] the metas, where they got their powers from, and it’s tied into everybody’s journey this year … Cicada’s powers are different than DeVoe’s [and] any of the speedsters in the way they affect our team.”

Even though this is season 5, in a lot of ways this has some echoes of being a season about origin stories. For example, you’re going to have a chance to learn a good bit more about Caitlin’s past through the arrival of her father into the world. Meanwhile, maybe we’re also going to learn more about Nora’s powers along the way.
