Should Making It season 2 run longer than six episodes?

Making It episode 1

As we approach the finale of Making It on NBC this Tuesday, we can’t help but think already about a season 2.

The good news at the moment is simply this: It’s already 100% a sure thing that a season 2 is going to happen. This was confirmed recently by NBC on the heels of solid ratings and also a good critical reception for the Amy Poehler – Nick Offerman series. The show has a lot of humor and heart to it, and we like that so much of it has a small, intimate feel. It’s a reminder that reality competition shows don’t need some sort of enormous production backing them up.

If there is one criticism that we understand that is out there, it’s simply this: The show is so short. It only lasts for a handful of weeks and then it’s over. You can argue that the six-episode first season was largely an experiment, or that this is a model that the series can follow in the future.

We do understand a part of the reason for the shorter run: It makes production earlier and also possible for Offerman and Poehler, since we can’t imagine that the first season took more than a few weeks, at most, to film. It also enables it to be plugged-in almost anywhere in the schedule.

If we were to make a case for a longer season, we’d potentially push it up to eight episodes and maybe add one more contestant to the mix. This way, you could end the season with just two contestants and have more time to get to know everyone. Given the limited run of the season we haven’t had too many opportunities to really dive into who everyone is — the show’s done as good a job as they can, but it’s nonetheless still difficult.

We know that we should just be grateful that we’re getting a season 2 of Making It at all, but we cannot help ourselves from continuing to ask these questions.
