House of the Dragon season 3 episode 3: Ormund makes his move

Coming into House of the Dragon season 3, there was enough footage of Ormund Hightower for us to realize that he was going to be a major player. (Also, he is played by James Norton — that is an accomplished enough performer for us to realize that he will hardly be a blip on the radar.)
Now that all of that has been said, did you ever predict what we saw at the end of the installment this week? Right when it seemed as though Rhaenyra was moving closer to uniting the Seven Kingdoms, someone else had other plans.

What Ormund did was in some ways the exact opposite of Egg’s plot on A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. On that show, he pretended to not be a Targaryen in pursuit of his own goals. Here, meanwhile, Ormund forced a young man into becoming Alicent’s son Daeron for the sake of a false peace deal. This was a smokescreen to give him time to then take over some of Rhaenyra’s territory was his army. The real Daeron is still out there, and now Emma D’Arcy’s character faces a hard choice. In order to stop Ormund at this point, innocent lives will be lost. She wants to be a kind and virtuous ruler, but she cannot be a reflection of Viserys given that she faces different conflicts and struggles.
While Alicent has been keen to advise Rhaenyra on some level, there are other problems that may need to be attended to at some point, as well. Just consider the fact that Aemond is off in Harrenhal and while he did not appear in this episode, we do have a hard time thinking that he is a-okay with signing off for Alicent’s plans … which he obviously did not know about.
