This Is Us season 3 promo takes you back to the early days

This Is Us season 3

The upcoming third season of This Is Us is set to debut on NBC come Tuesday, September 25, and judging from the first promo alone, we’re heading far back in time.

This video (which CarterMatt has for you below) shows you some footage from around the time of “Moonshadow,” which was the season 1 finale that showed you for the first time how Jack and Rebecca first met. She was a singer performing at the time, and he just so happened to be in the audience listening to her. Their epic relationship continued from there and during at least part of this season, the writers will be exploring both that — and also Jack in Vietnam.

There is actually a pretty smart, logistical reason for This Is Us to really hone in and concentrate on this era in the third season — they likely want to take advantage of having Milo Ventimiglia without a mustache for a little while. These are two specific periods where the character doesn’t have one.

As for what else we know is coming in the new season, the promo also showcases a period in which we’re going to be seeing the Big Three’s birthdays in the present — and, to go along with that, we’re going to see them try to chart out some of their immediate future. For example, Kate is going to be interested in trying to start a family after losing her baby during season 2. She’s ready to move forward again and we imagine that this will be an emotional story for her. Given that we’ve already seen her deal with some tragedy already, we really hope that the show finds a different way to go about things this time around — doesn’t she deserve a win at this point? Don’t many of the show’s characters?
