Supergirl season 4 debate: Should Jenna Dewan return as Lucy Lane?

Supergirl

When you are a part of the Arrowverse, you almost have to assume that on some level, there are going to be loose ends. They mostly just come with the territory! There are often actors who have to leave for other opportunities and with that, there are some loose ends that never get completely tied up.

For a good example, just think back to Supergirl and Jenna Dewan as Lucy Lane. She was a key recurring presence for most of the first season, a tie to James Olsen’s past, and someone with key ties to the military who helped to flesh out the relationship between Kara and the Armed Forces. Basically, what we’re trying to say here is that Lucy was pretty important to the story in season 1.

Yet, following the series’ move to the CW, we haven’t had a chance to see her again. Logistically, it’s not hard to figure this out. Supergirl moved up to Vancouver and that would require Dewan to travel north to film — even though she has a number of other gigs. She is the host of World of Dance on NBC and also has a gig on The Resident this coming. She is also is set to star in Mixtape, the upcoming series at Netflix. Basically, Dewan’s got a pretty full plate of projects at the moment. She’s a prime example of someone who ends up getting so many other opportunities that it’s hard to keep her — especially since she is not a series regular on Supergirl.

The ramifications that come with not getting Dewan back include many different things, whether it be fewer updates on Superman / Lois Lane’s relationship or the Superwoman story that could have happened, given the comic-book origins. That would have enabled Dewan to play someone who was effectively a very different character. We do think there’s still potential to tell that story, but the series would have to find a way to get her back — and that seems like quality the challenge right now given her schedule for the months to come. The best hope may be to get her to make an appearance in an episode or two next year, whether it be at the end of season 4 or in the early going of season 5. We almost compare her situation now to that of Calista Flockhart — there’s always a chance, but we don’t exactly count on it. (We’re a little more confident that we’ll see Calista again eventually, even if it is just a cameo at some point the road.)
