House of the Dragon season 3 episode 4: Is Corlys now in danger?

Heading into House of the Dragon season 3 episode 4 on HBO this coming weekend, it does feel as though Rhaenyra may be down a critical ally. For the past two seasons, Corlys has been extremely valuable to her cause — heck, without many of his ships, there is a chance that she never gets to this point!

However, there is a chance that Steve Toussaint’s character is now done with her for good. She denied the request to publicly legitimize both Alyn and Addam, feeling that it would cause even more suspicion around some of her own children. He was very-much enraged, and it was a reminder that this is a man near the end of his rope. Rhaenys is dead, and much of his home has been destroyed. For the sake of his own legacy, this is something he was desperate to have.

Speaking further on all of this to Variety, Toussaint himself does what he can to break things down, explaining how the character has landed in this place:

“It’s one of the things that he does without thinking … Looking at the scene in the script, I remember thinking, ‘OK, well, the last time someone said that to her, it was his brother, and he died within seconds.’ So this is a very dangerous thing to do, but I feel like he’s completely at the end of his tether. In that moment, he doesn’t care, which, again, is why he raises his voice. It’s not like he sort of just goes, ‘I know what’s going on.’ He screamed it out. He doesn’t care. And it’s very defiant: I dare you to prove me wrong, because the world has suspected this anyway, and I’ve kept a secret. It’s not careless abandoned, that’s not quite what it is. I think it’s like, do your worst. I don’t care. There’s nothing you can do that will make the truth any different to what it is.”

Is there any way to come back from this? That remains to be seen, especially since Corlys has no real reason to defect to what remains of the Greens. Could he try to be neutral? Sure, but in what world would that go well for him?
