Vikings season 5 episode 11 trailer debate: Could Lagertha die this season?
The video below was first released while at San Diego Comic-Con last month and at the center of it lies many questions, whether it be the role that Rollo (Clive Standen) will be playing now that he’s back and how far the war between brothers is really going to go. At the moment, Ivar does have more power than he’s ever had before, as he has shown himself to have the perfect combination of skills for someone within this world. He’s smart, he’s shrewd, and he also just so happens to be completely ruthless. He is willing to do more or less anything that he needs to in order to ensure that he gets what he wants at the end of the day. This is troublesome for many different characters, but it also does raise some pretty fantastic stakes for the remainder of this season – especially since the trailer reveals that Ivar has indeed taken over Kattegat from Lagertha.
Yet, what we want to frame this discussion around is the status of Lagertha, who has been subject to a prophecy by the Seer saying that she will die at the hands of one of Ragnar’s sons. The moment in the trailer that scares us the most is watching a bloodied Lagertha falling to the ground… have we seen her demise or is this just a fall in battle where she will get back up once again like a phoenix from the flames?
Right now she is a cog in the larger war to come between the brothers and with her already surviving the midseason finale, (and seeing that she and Bjorn do escape from this particular battle with Ivar alive) we do think that the fear of death is gone – at least for the first few episodes. The trailer shows that Bjorn is not going to settle with Ivar ruling over Kattegat, so the fighting isn’t done and if Lagertha has anything to say about it, she will be by his side when the next fight kicks off. This is where we fear for Lagertha the most.
We know that Katheryn Winnick has a new TV project in the works with showrunner John Wirth, but what makes the timing on that so curious is that really, it would not interfere with her work on season 5 or season 6, given how far ahead the series is in filming. Heck, it’s possible that Vikings could have a season 7 and she could still appear, given that Standen has still shown up on the show himself after landing a lead role on Taken. Yet, with Lagertha it feels clear that death is lingering for her and this is the thought that reverberates in our mind while watching the trailer. Vikings is a show about conquest, but it is also about honor — if we do see Lagertha go, it will likely be in a way she feels is right.
