Blue Bloods season 9: Should Darnell Potter return?

Blue Bloods season 9

One of the things that we’re going to be discussing when it comes to Blue Bloods season 9 over the coming weeks is whether or not we should see the return of many popular characters from seasons past — whether they be people we’ve seen on just a few occasions or several over the course of the series.

Today, we’re putting the focus on one of the show’s best foils for Frank in particular in Reverend Darnell Potter. What’s so fascinating about the relationship between these two men is that neither one of them is adversarial in terms of their nature. They’re both just smart, confident individuals that are willing to do whatever they can to help the people they represent. For Frank, that is the men and women of the NYPD. For Potter, that includes many of the people he helps to mentor and serve as a Reverend, plus also within the black community in New York City.

What’s so interesting about where the two are now is that there is such a degree of variation possible in their relationship. We know that both of these characters, for example, have experienced great pain and loss. That’s what Frank used to connect with Potter after his son was shot back in season 7. They two formed a better sense of understanding in going through what they did in that episode, devastating as it may be. Yet, we don’t exactly think that the relationship between Darnell and Frank is going to remain cordial forever. African-Americans are still being treated differently by many police officers all over the country, and that of course includes some in New York City. Darnell still has a group to fight for and represent, and Frank will do his best still to defend his officers, provided that they are following the proper laws. It makes sense to circle back to these two characters and their relationship every couple of seasons, and it certainly feels like now is a great time.

Also, Ato Essandoh is a fantastic actor and we know that there’s a lot of value in figuring out ways to continue Potter’s story — though we realize that he is a super-busy guy in between his work on Chicago Med, Elementary, and his upcoming series The Code.
