NCIS season 16: How can series resolve Vance cliffhanger?

NCIS

When NCIS season 16 premieres on CBS come September (most likely), it will have what is a primary order of business: Trying to figure out just what it wants to do in terms of its big cliffhanger.

Over the years, we’ve certainly seen many of these play out in some different forms, but often with various cast members in danger. For example, last year we were in this position where McGee and Gibbs were captured. While we were reasonably confident that the two characters were going to end up being okay on the other side of that, the reality with this sort of show is that you never quite know and there is almost always the potential for things to go terribly awry.

With Vance, the most likely scenario when it comes to resolving this cliffhanger is that the NCIS teams come together and do everything within their power to figure out precisely how to get him back. There’ll probably be a lot of action in the process, but along the way they really need to do the work to figure out what they are up against. Of course, another possibility is that Vance actually dies, and with that the show undergoes a fairly big operational shakeup where Gibbs ends up being promoted to Director. We don’t really like that idea so much, just because we like the idea that Gibbs constantly has someone to answer to and his current position keeps him a little bit more on the front line with some of the other characters on the show.

One way or another, know that this is not a story that NCIS is probably going to wait on. There is going to be a sense of urgency to offer up answers sooner rather than later and following the premiere, the show will probably try to settle back into more of its groove again. This is the familiar pattern that we have seen with the series rather frequently over the years.
