Following The Terror, what’s next for Tobias Menzies?

Tobias Menzies

There’s something fun about seeing an actor you’ve loved for some time start to become more well-known by the general public, and that is something that has happened over the course of the past year or so with Tobias Menzies. He’s been exceptional in shows like Game of Thrones, Outlanderand Rome, and tonight his latest work in The Terror comes to a close over on AMC. (As for whether or not Menzies actually appears, that remains to be seen given what happened to James Fitzjames last week.)

We do think that this limited series should make him an Emmy contender, like he could be for Outlander and like he really should’ve been back for those episodes at the end of season 1. He’s a sensational performer who captures both the earthy quality of his characters as well as their ambitions and misgivings. Fitzjames was certainly different from Frank and Black Jack Randall, and in turn they were different from Edmure Tully.

So for those of you who discovered Menzies for the first time on The Terror, we thought we’d look at least briefly towards what his future could now hold.

The Crown season 3 – This is for sure where you will see him next. He is taking on the role of Prince Philip previously inhabited by Matt Smith, and this is by far the most high-profile gig we have seen for Tobias to date. He will be given rich material and have an opportunity to work alongside another fantastic actress in Olivia Colman who has been long underrated in this industry.

Is there more of him on Outlander– For the sake of spoilers we don’t want to give much away, but given that both of his characters are dead the producers would have to find an extremely creative way to bring him back and have it make sense. We’re thinking either in terms of a flashback or some sort of dream sequence.

If you’re interested in checking out some of Menzies’ other past work, he made a handful of appearances in the limited series The Night Manager alongside Hugh Laurie and Tom Hiddleston; to see him in a more comedic setting, he has appeared in a handful of Catastrophe episodes. Many of his roles have been fairly dark and serious over the years, and it’s with that in mind that we absolutely welcome some more opportunities to see him in comedic settings.
