When could Outlander season 5 start filming? Laying out the timeline
Has the Starz drama been officially renewed as of yet? Not so much, but all signs point towards it coming back, and if production really wants to, there is certainly every reason to think that season 5 production could start taking place later this fall. This would follow the pattern of the past two seasons, which operated under a time-frame of filming from around the start of October until mid-to-late June.
Given that we are entering season 5 at this point, the fair assumption to make is that Outlander is largely a well-oiled machine, or at least as much of one as it can be for a show with multiple filming locations and elaborate sets and costumes. They know the windows in which certain things need to be done. For example, locations have to be scouted a good stretch of time before pre-production can begin there. Meanwhile, the writers room will need to open this summer so that there are lines for the actors to actually read when they return. While it may not seem like it when you think just about Outlander filming alone, this really is a year-long commitment for a lot of the people who are involved in the show day in and day out.
It’s really with this in mind that at some point down the line, we wouldn’t be shocked if there is a longer break between seasons just to let everyone catch their breath a little bit. This used to be a little less common in the world of TV, but now, shows like Westworld, Game of Thrones, and Breaking Bad have shown that they can pick off precisely where they left off (if not better) in the ratings after a break. There’s no word that one is coming for Outlander, but it is something to keep in mind.
Another thing to keep in mind is the source material. If you were to think in a linear fashion, season 5 should be based on the fifth Diana Gabaldon book in The Fiery Cross. However, there has been an openness behind the scenes to mix around some of the source material in the future, whether they be combining books or splitting them up differently. As we’ve seen with Game of Thrones, this can happen as time goes along and stories start to diverge here and there.
